Midday Politics: Coleman Sues, Queens Candidates "Battle Down to the Wire"
And you thought the lawsuits would come after the election: CityPages breaks the story that Minnesota Senator Norm Coleman is suing challenger Al Franken for "running false attacks against a political candidate" for saying in an ad Coleman was "living almost rent-free." Coleman had previously filed, and dropped, similar charges against Hubert Humphrey III and Paul Wellstone. A Coleman spokesman claims it's "not a tactic." (Reporters asked the spokesman about Coleman's utility bills, information on which they'd previously requested; he said he'd "see what we can do about that.")
The Queens Gazette says State Senator Frank Padavan faces "one of his toughest challenges in his 36 years as Northeast Queens' representative" against Councilmember James Gennaro. Gennaro claims Padavan has "failed to serve Queens' working families." Mayor Bloomberg has endorsed Padavan. The Gazette also reports that another longtime state senator and Bloomberg endorsee, Serphin Maltese, has been "boosted" by the recent clearance of the Aqueduct casino (though Democrats tried to make hay of it); Addabbo, with whom he battles "Down To The Wire," recently received the endorsement of Hillary Clinton and challenges Maltese on gun control and health care.
