Chinatown Group Complains About English-Only Rezoning Hearing

cquinn.jpgThis morning the City Council will hold a public hearing chaired by Tony Avella on rezoning in Community District 3. The area under consideration contains Chinatown, and the Coalition to Protect Chinatown/LES is complaining of the plan on offer that it "protects" the "wealthy East Village from high-rises but encourages developers to bulldoze poor neighborhoods, Chinatown and LES." They also complain that the Speaker, Christine Quinn, has "refused" to offer Chinese translation for such Chinatown residents as wish to attend. (In 2003 the Downtown Express reported that about 40 percent of Chinatown residents speak English poorly or not at all.) The group's representative, Yolanda Donato, also claims that "More than 11,000 members of this community have already signed petitions demanding that the racist East Village/ LES rezoning plan be stopped."
