Mopping Up: Local Election Results Mostly Expected

espadavideo.comThere are still some undecided races out there. Al Franken is getting a recount in Minnesota. And Missouri, Indiana and North Carolina's electoral votes are not yet settled.

But in New York most things were wrapped up early, and one thing that was quickly apparent was that the State Assembly and the State Senate are now solidly Democratic for the first time in decades. They have 32 of 62 seats in the Senate, which had prior to this election been thinly held by the Republicans, and consolidated their lead in the Assembly.

There were few surprises. Despite the opposition of BlackBook, Daniel Squadron got into the State Senate. So did Pedro Espada. Michael McMahon took Vito Fossella's U.S. Congressional seat, Chris Lee got Tom Reynolds', and Kirsten Gillibrand is staying in hers. And the referendum on weighting of veterans' applications for civil service jobs was passed in favor of the vets.
