Neighbors Fight Expansion of Brooklyn Jail

In the golden days of 2006, the city had all kinds of lovely plans for the Brooklyn House of Detention: it was going to get condos, stores, maybe even "an upscale food market" and "a boutique hotel." Alas, reality intruded, and it was just going to become a bigger jail. Now community groups backed by councilmember David Yassky and Comptroller Thompson are suing to block the expansion, saying it "would have a destructive effect on the local economy." The current plan includes some retail space, but with the addition of 1,500 prisoners, we're not sure how vibrant a commercial environment this will create. Photo via Gowanus Lounge.
