Pentagon Xmas Party Off; Will Contractors Step Up?

santasoldier.jpgThe Federal Government has begun cutting back already! The Times reports that the Pentagon's annual holiday party has been cancelled. Even after 1,000 of the 1,500 invitations had gone out, a spokesman for the host and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen said the Admiral and his wife "felt it would be more appropriate to focus their time this year on the wounded" and their loved ones, but we suspect some awareness of the general budget disaster played a part.

It may not be a big loss in these abstemious times: A poster from the Department of Defense told the Washington Post's Federal Diary last year that "the best part of our holiday party is talking to the older staffers about what parties at DoD used to be like -- margarita machines and antics that should have led to DUIs and divorces." But according to the DoD's Holiday Guidance for Federal Personnel, Pentagonians can still party with "prohibited sources including contractors" so long as the event is public or "widely attended" and their boss says it's cool. If Halliburton can't at least throw these kids a Christmas party, then we don't know what.
