Term Limits Team Announces Lawsuit at City Hall

Categories: Featured

thompsonterms.jpgYesterday an interesting mix of politicians (the Post calls them "Odd Allies"), including Conservative Party Chairman Mike Long and civil rights attorney Norm Siegel, appeared in front of City Hall to announce their lawsuit against Mike Bloomberg, Christine Quinn, and the Board of Elections for their overturn of local term limits.

Comptroller Bill Thompson called the group "a unique and amazing cross section of New Yorkers" and told reporters that New Yorkers are "outraged that their votes have been discarded" and have approached him in "stores and in the subway" to protest.

Former Staten Island Beep Guy Molinari, who serves as lead plaintiff in the suit, referred to "the days when I was fighting with the Marines in Korea" when "people would say, 'We're here to defend our democracy.'"

Term limits did well in referenda nationwide last Tuesday and polls well here. But with the bill signed and the courts their only option, Bloomberg's opponents can't be feeling optimistic for anything but a public statement they can show the voters in future campaigns.
