Victory, Death, Celebrities at the NYC Marathon

wheelchairs.jpgPaula Radcliffe of Great Britain and Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil won yesterday's New York City Marathon. Gomes dos Santos' challenger, Moroccan Abderrahim Goumri, blamed some missed sugar drinks in Harlem for his inability to close. Radcliffe, who also won last year, hoisted her daughter Isla at the finish line. Second in the women's was Dire Tune of Ethiopia, but more local ink went to third-place finisher and born New Yorker Kara Goucher ("People were yelling, 'The Queens girl!'" she told Newsday. "I just wanted to stop and give them all a hug") and also-ran Mrs. Howard Stern aka Beth Ostrosky. (Mr. Scarlett Johansson, Ryan Reynolds, posted a respectable time of 03:50:22.) Carlos Jose Gomes, a 58-year-old from Sao Paulo, died shortly after crossing the finish line; two other runners suffered heart attacks. Three-time-winners Kurt Fearnley (Australia) and Edith Hunkeler (Switzerland) were the top wheelchair finishers.
