Gypsy to Close, Along With Rest of Broadway

luponegypsy.jpgIt's axiomatic that even in hard times people still want their entertainment. But it has been suggested that, thanks to online entertainment, Hollywood may not do as well in the New Depression as it did in the Old. Now the Times is attributing a wave of upcoming Broadway closings -- Young Frankenstein, Hairspray, Boeing-Boeing, and Grease, among many others -- to the rotten economy, and the producers of Gypsy are also saying as much, citing "uncertain financial times" as the spur to their planned March 1 shutdown. Gypsy has been playing to weak houses for a while and was at 64 percent capacity last week. Our grandparents got Abbott and Costello, and we get JibJab -- this Depression is going to suck!
