John Galt, 3 Men Charged in Deutsche Bank Fire; City Gets Off

deutschesmoke.jpgIt was suggested this summer that DA Robert Morgenthau would charge the city for negligence in last year's Deutsche Bank fire that killed two firemen. But according to the Times, the DA instead made a deal whereby the city will create a "new civilian division" to oversee high-rise construction where, as with the Bank, demolition or asbestos abatement work is happening, and Deutsche Bank's general contractor Bovis Lend Lease LLP will pay for an independent monitor to oversee its future work.

Three men, however, as well as the shady John Galt Corporation behind the shoddy work that led to the fire, have been indicted: Galt executive Mitchell Alvo, who ordered a standpipe cut off, which deprived the firefighters of needed water; Galt foreman Salvatore DePaola, who it is said to have cut the standpipe; and Bovis site safety supervisor Jeffery Melofchik, who failed to report the incident. They surrendered to authorities this morning.
