Mayor: Juries' Decisions in Cop-Kill Cases "Inexplicable"

bloombergleft.jpgOne of Mayor Ed Koch's few attractive characteristics was his custom of reacting to any jury ruling, no matter how controversial, with a simple "the people have spoken." It showed not only political shrewdness, but also an admirable respect for the boundary between executive and judicial power and respect for the judgement of his fellow citizens. Today the Daily News reports Mayor Bloomberg's reaction to the recent Brancato and Ellis trials, in which men accused of involvement in the murder of cops were acquitted. The Mayor called it "a tough week for society" and asserted, after admitting "I shouldn't get involved in the details of any one case," that "it's inexplicable to me how the juries came to their conclusions."
