New School Occupied; Kerrey, Cops on Premises

occupiedns.jpg

Last night a group of students from the New School (and from other local schools, in solidarity) "reclaimed the cafeteria at the New School University as an autonomous student center." (Amor y Resistencia has photos.) Their grievances are several: mainly they seem to be protesting the impending state cuts to education and the resulting tuition hikes, but another statement from the "Radical Student Union" says they want New School President Bob Kerrey and EVP James Murtha fired and their replacements elected by students, faculty, and staff; an anonymous spokesman expresses "explicit solidarity with those occupying the universities and streets in Greece, Italy, France and Spain."

Though the occupiers' latest report says that the students "have just expanded the occupation to control one sidedoor exit," it also mentions that Kerrey and a bunch of cops are on premises, so the occupation may be winding down.
