Pete Best on "I've Got a Secret," 1964

We remember the Hunter Davies 1968 biography of the Beatles, and the poignant episode in which he described Pete Best slicing bread in a bake shop and "understandably bitter" about his dealings with his former group. At one point Best was so popular that a club owner demanded his drums be moved forward so the girls could see him. We are especially panged when host Garry Moore asks him why he left the Beatles and he mumbles, "I thought I'd like to start a group of my own," which is not the generally accepted version.
