Pete Townsend, Other Oddities at Kennedy Center Honors

whokennedy.jpg

Weird crop of honorees at the Kennedy Center Honors last night: Barbra Streisand, Morgan Freeman, George Jones, Twyla Tharp, and... surviving Who members Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey. Furriners? This Administration is really falling apart. Nonetheless Streisand (who was toasted by Queen Latifah, Ne-Yo and Beyonce) exchanged kisses with President Bush at the event, which moment of comity she later spoiled, reports Forbes, by wishing aloud it were Obama instead. A choir of cops and firemen sang the chorus of "Baba O'Reilly" behind Rob Thomas, and, from two seconds of evidence in this video clip, Joss Stone did "My Generation" in the manner of Lola Falana at the Sands in 1967. Townsend also spoiled everything, thank heavens, by telling a reporter this just proves rock's over ("When a rap artist finally rolls up here and gets the Kennedy honors, it's the end of rap, really, isn't it?") The immortal Jones was honored by younger, shittier country musicians, but is in his late, mellow phrase and did not spoil anything.
