Staten Islander Escaped Mumbai Massacre

When the violence erupted, Cirincione found exit routes from her Taj Mahal hotel room blocked by flames and gunfire, so she waited for help; when the room filled with smoke and she couldn't open the window, she used a corkscrew to drill a hole in the window frame so she could breathe. Cirincione was finally able to signal firefighters with a headlamp early Thursday morning. She's at home now, recuperating. "I'm good at emergencies," said Cirincione, "and that's why I'm attracted to the more difficult destinations."
