Yassky, Other Brooklyn Pols Cave on Billburg Bike Lanes (Updated)

sexycyclist.jpgCouncilmember David Yassky -- last seen in these parts giving in to Mayor Bloomberg's term limits overthrow -- has been a city bike enthusiast in the past. He's a sponsor of the Bikes in Buildings council bill that would mandate parking in workplaces and looks to be on its way to passage.

But now that the Hasidic community in south Williamsburg has gotten serious -- not to say violent -- about the lanes going through their turf, in part because they don't like immodestly dressed female bikers, Yassky is caving to them, says the Brooklyn Paper. Yassky, Councilmember Diana Reyna, and Beep Marty Markowitz signed a letter demanding removal of one of the lanes. "We want a bike lane that the community supports and one that is implemented in a way that is collaborative," said a Yassky spokesman. Maybe that means handing out hijabs to lady cyclists at Grand Street. (Update: Yassky's office responds -- see here.)
