$1 Million Rent Kills the Librairie Francaise

librairie.jpgThanks to TONY for letting us know: the Librairie Francaise is closing. Rockefeller Center has raised the French booksellers' rent from $360,000 a year to -- get this -- $1 million. David Rockefeller accommodated the library in 1935 to lend a touch of class to the new Center, but who goes to Rockefeller Center for class now? "The Center has become a shopping mall," Librairie owner Emmanuel Molho told AFP. Indeed, a garish chocolatier or piss-elegant chain store is probably negotiating with management as we speak. The Librairie will be open till September, and thereafter their wares will be available on the web.
