Amato Opera to Close in May

We literally wouldn't know what we were missing if it weren't for Jeremiah's Vanishing New York. Today JVNY informs us that the Amato Opera is closing. Anthony Amato began his little opera company in 1948 and in 1964 moved it to its current home on the Bowery. We recall seeing, as we headed to CBGB some nights, costumed actors from the Amato hanging out between scenes in the empty lot out back. The Amato's goal has been to make opera affordable to both producers and audiences, but these aren't great times for the affordable, and apparently the Amato couldn't hold out till the New Depression. The company will bring down its last curtain on Le Nozze di Figaro in May. "With its location on Varvatos-Chase Way," says Jeremiah, the Amato building "will probably be demolished this summer for a luxury finger building."
