Anne Hathaway Fix Evaporates at Golden Globes

We weren't even going to mention the Golden Globes until we saw it on the front page of the New York Times -- who ever thought the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, once described as "100 stringers living off hors d'oeuvres," would gather such respect! -- but now we're duty-bound to mention that Anne Hathaway did not, as suggested by last week's website gaffe, win a Best Actress award at last night's ceremonies. So either the Globes are less corrupt than previously assumed, or more clever about it.

Some of the film winners were unorthodox. (HFPA protocol separates them into comedy/musical and dramatic divisions, but the dramatic nominees are usually the more serious contenders for future awards.) Slumdog Millionaire won Best Dramatic Picture. Director, and Screenplay against competitors like Frost/Nixon, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Revolutionary Road. Mickey Rourke bested a starry field for Best Actor in The Wrestler, and Hathaway was supplanted by Kate Winslet for Revolutionary Road. Winslet also won Best Supporting Actress for The Reader, and dead Heath Ledger won Best Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight.

Most other awards were as expected, and there was some shenanigans and swearing at the ceremonies which are beneath the notice as so exalted a venue as this (except that Sacha Cohen said in these economically depressed times, "even Madonna has had to get rid of one of her personal assistants -- our thoughts go out to you, Guy Ritchie." How that must have stung for about ninety seconds!)
