Assemblyman Brings Bill Requiring Special Senate Election

tedisco.jpgThe expected appointment of Caroline Kennedy to replace outgoing Senator Hillary Clinton has caused Governor Paterson some trouble. If he's interested, Republican assemblyman James Tedisco offers a way out. Tedisco has introduced Bill A1829, which "provides for a special election to fill vacancies in the office of United States senator from this state" within 90 days of its vacancy, which given the progress of Clinton's Secretary of State appointment hearings, would be in April. Staten Island Assemblyman Lou Tobacco and other Republicans are backing Tedisco up.

It's thought the Democrats would block the bill, which is now in the governmental operations committee, but all other things being equal, this could cure a headache for Paterson -- unless the Republicans are just playing chicken.
