David Wells Defends Yanks from Joe Torre

wellsfinger.jpgAt ESPN former Yankees pitcher David Wells comments on Joe Torre's new book, which contains some smack about Alex Rodriguez and others. Wells suggests Torre may not have read the co-authored text, "which I'm very guilty of," he adds, having included in his own autobio Perfect I'm Not a description of Red owner Marge Schott as "ten pounds of cuckoo in a four-pound clock," tales of painkiller abuse, fistfights, etc. He expresses concern for A-Rod and the other Yankees: "If you're gonna go on the road during the season, you're gonna get bashed by every fan out there, especially in New York." He adds, "If [Torre's] gonna talk smack on somebody like that, you better be able to back it up," though some fans have reason to find Torre's claim that teammates called Alex Rodriguez "A-Fraud" credible, and Larry Bowa and Mike Mussina admit that the term was used, though they say it was done affectionately. Perhaps A-Rod and the other Yankees should be relieved about the stories Torre didn't tell.

Wells is not officially retired and as recently as last spring expressed interest in rejoining the Yankees.
