Espada Still Owes $61K+ for Violations, Says Court

espadashocked.jpgOur hero Pedro Espada, incoming state senator and linchpin of the Gang of Three blocking Malcolm Smith's dream of power, said his unpaid campaign violation fines were a "clerical error" that would be cleared up in court. An appellate court has indeed cleared it up, but not in Espada's favor. The court backed the campaign finance board, and Espada still owes more than $61,000 on 22 violations, including "reporting fraudulent contributions to receive matching public funds and failing to report contributions from Soundview," the healthcare company he runs, during his unsuccessful run for borough president in 2001.

Commenters to Liz Benjamin's column doubt Espada will pay up. "What's the enforcement mechanism if Espada doesn't pay up... I doubt that the CFB can garnishee his paycheck," says one.
