The U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan is going after five midtown hotels they say are
not in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act -- that is, they don't accommodate people in wheelchairs. The Ameritania, Moderne, Amsterdam Court, Radio City Suites and the Hotel Carter were named. A lawyer for one of the owners of the Carter -- which was
unflatteringly reviewed by the
Times in 2005 ("Room 1105 was not so much a room as it was a place to lie low") -- tells the paper it's a bum rap, and that the hotel has a lift to get differently-abled guests from the sidewalk to the lobby, but it was recently put out of service while the Carter installed new carpeting. (He's not sure if it's running yet.) While he's at it, the lawyer tries his hand at hotel promotion: "Is it a palace? No. Is it the strange place it might have been a few years ago? No, and it's getting better." Public relations should really be left to professionals.
