Geithner Paid Taxes Late, Had Illegal Housekeeper

Categories: Featured, Politics
geithner.jpgWhile Hillary Clinton breezed through her Senate confirmation hearings (except for some suggestions that her husband accept more prohibitions on his global programs while she serves), proposed Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner encountered a late bump on the road to his own. It has been revealed that Geithner failed to pay his self-employment taxes for 2001 through 2004 when they were due. (Geithner was then working for the International Monetary Fund, which does not withhold U.S. payroll taxes.) The IRS caught the last two years in an audit, and billed and dunned Geithner for them, but apparently missed the 2001 and 2002 lapses, leaving them for Obama's vetters to detect and request that Geithner file.

Also, one of Geithner's housekeepers overstayed her work visa while in his employ. Senate finance committee chairman Max Baucus characterized these as "honest mistakes," so there will probably be no repetition of the Zoe Baird-Kimba Wood fiascos.
