Habemus Corruptio! Senates Dems' Deal Settled

msmith.jpgWe know we've said this before, but it looks as if, on the morning of the actual vote, the Democrats of the state senate have pulled together a deal that will get everyone, including the rebellious Gang of Three, on board for Malcolm Smith to be elected to majority leader.

The New York Times breaks down the key chairmanships: Carl Kruger to finance, Pedro Espada to housing construction and community development and "vice president of the Senate for Urban Policy" Ruben Diaz to aging. Politicker has a longer list which has Espada also chairing the rules committee (!), and hometown boys Joe Addabbo to elections, Martin Malave Dilan to transportation, Tom Duane to health, Hiram Monserrate to consumer protection, Jose Serrano to tourism, recreation and sports development, and newbie Daniel Squadron to cities.

No one knows for sure the disposition of gay marriage in the deal, which had previously floundered on Diaz' opposition.

The Daily News celebrated the news with an op-ed, "The N.Y. Legislature is an embarrassment and must reform itself," and the Times with an editorial, "Still Broken After All These Years."
