Holiday Cocktail Lounge Finished?

holidaylounge.jpgJeremiah's Vanishing New York notes a disturbing development for serious East Village drinkers: the Holiday Cocktail Lounge on St. Mark's Place appears to be shuttered, and a neighbor informs Jeremiah that the 90-ish owner has gone to the hospital. The Lounge has been running since 1965; W.H. Auden was a famous early patron, and in recent decades the Holiday became a refuge for people who prefer to drink cheaply among unpretentious decor and in relative darkness whatever the hour. A 2006 New York Times consideration observed that while "on weekend nights, the crowd is younger, more college-y," the weekday clientele was older and more serenely bibulous, which comports with our memories of it. Another perhaps ominous sign: the January 17 Club Animals meeting previously scheduled for the Holiday has had a change of venue.
