Van Kills Child, Hurts Others in Chinatown (Updated)

chinatowncrash.jpgAround noon a van marked "China Chalet" (a local catering firm) apparently hit several children at 38 East Broadway in Chinatown near Market Street. One of the children is reported dead. We're not sure what the kids were doing there but there are a couple of schools nearby including Mesivta Tifereth Jerusalem.

38 East Broadway has seen the death of a child before: 9-year-old Fiorita Fernandez Leung perished in a fire at that address in 1983.

Update: The Times reports the kids were being led back to the Red Apple Child Development Center from the Chatham Square Library when the van, going backwards, jumped the curb. Two children were killed, and many adults and children on the crowded street were injured.
