Bedbug Complaints Up in City, at Fashion Week

bedbugright.jpgGale Brewer's interest in a New York bedbug bill could hardly come at a better time: the Daily News reports that bedbug complaints are up 34 percent from last year. Tireless local anti-bedbug crusader Renee Corea says the problem is certainly much worse, as many New Yorkers don't call 311, from which the number is taken, but just call their landlords or exterminators. The Bedbug Registry lists three new infestation reports in Brooklyn and three in Manhattan since Friday. And attendees of Cynthia Rowley's Fashion Week show at the Jane Hotel were greeted by protesting tenants with signs that read, "Are Bed Bugs the New Black?" referring to their endemic problems with the bloodsuckers.

The problem is of course not new to us but we're glad to see it getting more attention. The city council will hold hearings on three related bills on Tuesday.
