Jerry Tallmer Scores a Nathan Award

Wins Nathan Award

Jerry Tallmer, associate editor and drama critic of The Village Voice, will receive the George Jean Nathan Award in Drama Criticism, the largest cash prize in the American theatre, for the 1960-61 season. The award, approximately $4000, was established by the late Mr. Nathan, one of America's foremost critics, "to encourage and assist in developing the art of drama criticism and the stimulation of intelligent theatre-going." The prize is voted annually by the heads of the English departments of Yale, Princeton, and Cornell. Concerning Tallmer, who helped found The Voice in 1955, the judges said: "By the wit and vigor of his writing, by the depth of his concern with difficult and highly experimental productions, by the range and intelligence of his outlook, he has played a very important part in creating the present success of the off-Broadway theatre."
