Geezer Wins at Westminster Dog Show

Ch Clussexx Three D Grinchy Glee (aka Stump) was born December 1, 1998. In dog years, he's Harrison Ford, but that didn't keep the superannuated Sussex spaniel from showing up the young stars at the Westminster Dog Show at Madison Square Garden last night and taking Best in Show. Stump, whose competition were all born in the present century, is the first Sussex spaniel to win the award -- though Cocker, English Springer, Irish Water and Clumber Spaniels have won in years past -- and the oldest Best in Show in Westminster's 132-year history. He suffered an unknown illness in 2004, and had not shown between then and this Westminster.

This year's Show also featured the first inclusion of the Bourdeaux mastiff, in which category Ch Gargoyles Brando T Beefcake took top honors, and protests by PETA, whose demonstrators wore Ku Klux Klan outfits because, PETA says, "dog breeders routinely use inbreeding and genetic manipulation to achieve certain 'desirable' traits," which they compare to the theory of a "master race."
