Nate Silver Takes All the Suspense Out of the Oscars

Every year people bitch that the Oscars are boring, and this year's event just lost what little non-wardrobe interest it had, because Nate Silver has called the winners. The supergenius statistician who predicted the last Presidential election's results with uncanny accuracy tells New York magazine that in the top categories, Slumdog Millionaire and its director Danny Boyle, Mickey Rourke, Kate Winslet, Heath Ledger and Taraji P. Henson are shoo-ins, using reasoning surprisingly similar to our own office-pool-losing method: Henson, for example, is favored because "[The Curious Case of Benjamin] Button, which looks like a shutout everywhere else, is the only Best Picture nominee with a Supporting Actress nod, and Best Pic nominees tend to have an edge in the other categories." Silver refrains from calling winners in the other categories, probably because AMPAS begged him. The now-meaningless show, hosted by Hugh Jackman, airs February 22.
