NYU Protest Update: No to Concessions, Yes to Nudity

• I think that this is a bit of a silly way to protest, but any negative exposure that NYU gets will help. I went to NYU and was forced to transfer because of the overwhelmingly high tuition cost and the bureaucratic bullshit that one has to go through to get any answers. NYU doesn't treat its students very well most of the time, and DOES make us feel like consumers more than students--buying the NYU product and making us slave to their high costs. It's just silly.

• I HATE this protest! I am a current NYU student, and no, i'm not excited about shelling out 50k a year in tuition, however... NYU is a well-respected institution, and it's insulting that these people are getting publicity and are absolutely NOT representative of the well-educated and open-minded student body that MOST of us are! It makes us look like we're all crazy far-left stripping naked anti-semitic protest-happy vegans! no one's FORCING you to go here! if you don't like the way things are run, then TRANSFER!!! if you're attending NYU, you should be intelligent enough to figure out an actually EFFECTIVE way to do this, not taking over a dining hall to strip for media coverage!!! grrrrrr and stop injuring our security guards with your so-called "non-violent" protest!!!

• I agree with Denise. Although I support the idea of publicity-stunt protests (colleges like this are all about their reputation), I think if the members of Take Back NYU! want to get the most results at this point, it would be more than wise to consolidate their demands into the two basic arguments that all students can agree on: budget transparency and a significant increase in financial aid. Anything else is diluting their/our power as students in protest. It seems arrogant to assume that just because this small group wants Bobst to be public or wants NYU to aid Gaza also means that the rest of NYU does. We need to be united right now, not divided. Point is: props to you all for getting their attention! Make a choice that everyone be proud of!

• I'm a parent of an NYU student. Would I love tuition to go down?...sure I'm paying for it!!! But as I passed by the protestors this afternoon and a young lady whipped off her shirt, because she wanted "transparency", I could only laugh at her and I felt very old and wise. Their demand for a public Bobst are foolish and what does any of this have to do with GAZA? Seriously, they are making a mockery of legitimate college protests and causes!

• I�m going to spell out the library issue from a typical NYU student�s point of view. It is hard enough finding space in our 12-floor, suicide-inducing library. It�s always a struggle to find rooms and tables, and if you�re trying to get books from course reserves, you can expect a long waiting list and extremely limited time with your textbook. We don�t want more people in our library�if anything, we want them to get out. It�s one of the few places left where we can study (we don�t have a campus, remember?) and just because YOU (0.14%!) think that people should have public access, doesn�t mean WE (99.86%) will. You can�t argue for stabilized tuition and then open up our library to the public, because our tuition is what keeps the library running at its current rate, so bringing MORE people into our buildings will only increase the cost of maintaining our library. People in New York City pay taxes; let them use what their taxes pay for (yes, the New York Public Library, emphasis on the PUBLIC!) We pay tuition, so let us peacefully use what we are paying for. I think it�s a fair statement.

• i am an nyu student... idiots... look... like the anonymous person said above before, these protests of 50 students or so will do NOTHING... protesting infront of kimmel is the DUMBEST thing ever... you really wanna lower tuition? prevent people from applying to nyu... is that possible? no... thus, lowering tuition will NOT happen with these stupid protests... besides, why kimmel of all places... you really wanna get other people fired up and involved? do it infront of admissions office or Starbucks... stupid tisch kids...

• I go to NYU and I disagree with not only the outrageous cost of attending the university, but also that NYU refuses to disclose where our tuition money goes. NYU claims to be a "private university in the public service" however, they are really a private university in the service of only those who can afford it (or at least those who are willing to go into an enormous amount of debt). We deserve AT LEAST budget disclosures and a good explanation when tuition is increased.

• I go to NYU as well. In principle, I agree with them- but protests of this sort are a fairly minor annoyance to these people. What the protesters don't seem to realize is that our university slash corporation is run by some very powerful, very monied people. If you want them to bend, you have to hit them where it hurts- their pockets. NYU depends on its students for income far more than other comparable schools. You want to see John Sexton shit his pants? Get a large percentage of the student body to go on leave for a semester. And those who won't or can't? Get them to move out of NYU housing (approx $1550 a month! per person!). Get them to drop their meal plans (which can be $2000+ a semester). If a movement of that sort ever gained momentum, NYU would have no choice but to listen. It's a business like any other, don't delude yourself. The only way to get it to stop behaving badly is to boycott its products.

• look, i agree with some of what the protesters are fighting for (lower tuition, who can argue with that?) but i also heard that they want to make Bobst open to the public. most universities have private libraries, and there are many problems with making a 24 hour facility designed to help students study open to the public in a city such as new york. (i hope i do not have to list those here) it's illogical.

I sincerely hope NYU is churning out more intelligence than is evidenced by this bitter undergrad whose parents apparently have no problem coughing up the more than 45K/year that NYU is shamelessly charging. Good luck to these NYU protesters who seem to be showing some regard for their fellow students and the workers that keep their university running.
