Council Close to Passing a City Elephant Ban

elephantrestsmall.jpgThey just marched the elephants into Madison Square Garden, under the customary animal rights protests. But next year they may not get to: the Times tells us the city council bill first floated by Rose Mendez to ban circus elephants and other wild animals from the city has nearly enough votes to pass. (Zoos seem to be exempt.) The bill still might not go through -- for one thing, other animal-rights measures like Tony Avella's anti horse-drawn carriage bill have long lingered in the council, and speaker Christine Quinn is said to be unenthusiastic about this one -- but the near-majority of confirmed supporters makes it more likely. Then we'll get to the horses, and then to those people who dress their pets animal companions up in funny outfits.
