Sasha Frere-Jones' twitter informs us that
the WaMu in the East Village just got robbed. That makes, what, a hundred bank robberies so far this year?
Bank heists were up 54 percent in the city last year, and in 2009 are
already up 26 percent versus this time last year; one guy, still at large, has
eight damn bank jobs to his credit since January, and the police commissioner has taken to
warning banks to step up their security. Clearly this crime wave is unstoppable. Maybe Washington Mutual should just leave a bag marked "$" in a cardboard box out front.
