Happy St. Patrick's Day

stpats2009.jpg

We have noticed that the young folk attending the Parade in recent years are less inclined toward sentimental Kennedy-era Irish kitsch, and more toward the darker, more modern vibe of the Dropkick Murphys and Boondock Saints. While we approve of alt-Celt and FIGHT ME I'M IRISH t-shirts, we are glad there is still quarter left for green plastic hats and shamrock deely bobbers. The Parade starts at 11 a.m. and runs up Fifth Avenue from 44th to 86th Street. If you choose to abstain on account o' the discrimination, God go with you. Hibernians of the African-American persuasion may enjoy this essay on Frederick Douglass' Irish roots. These are of course reductive, stereotypical offerings, but that's what St. Patrick's Day is all about. Erin go bleargh!
