Governor Paterson's rotten week isn't ending much better than it started. Despite
pledging to cut his own salary by 10 percent to show some sensitivity to the battered fortunes of his state, he's still getting beaten up --
Mayor Bloomberg criticized him for reducing the amount of Medicaid money the city had been expecting from the state, and environmentalists are mad because Paterson is
defying New York's own rules to reduce the liability of polluters. But at least he's maintaining his good relations with the state's gay community: Paterson recently reaffirmed his order that
New York recognize the marriages of same-sex couples performed in other jurisdictions, and yesterday he
appointed two openly gay female judges to the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, which is a first. In doing so he has pissed off the usual
rightwing goons, which will probably make him a little more popular with the rest of us, too.
