Radio's George Weber Slain

Police found George Weber bound and stabbed to death in his Henry Street apartment Sunday morning. The former newsman for WABC radio, gone freelance since being laid off in February of 2008, was undressed and in his bed; his tub was running, the apartment was ransacked, and there were no signs of forced entry. Police had knocked on his door when he failed to show for work on Saturday, but received no answer; on their return Sunday a neighbor directed them to "a side door that Weber kept unlocked" through which they entered and found him on his bed. Today was Weber's birthday; he would have turned 48. The Daily News says police think he may have been "killed by a male date." Weber was a former contributor to "Live from City Hall with Mayor Mike and John Gambling," now on WOR-AM; he also worked with radio hosts Curtis Sliwa and Ron Kuby, He had recently been doing assignments for the ABC national radio organization. In a statement the Mayor mourned his loss and calls his reporting balanced, "incisive and insightful." Gersh Kuntzman recalled him as an "inveterate story-hunter." You can hear audio clips of Weber's work at his blog. Photo via GeorgeWeber.net.
