Silver: Bridge Tolls Off, For Now

brookbridgeright.jpgThe Queens Gazette was wondering whether Sheldon Silver had the votes to push bridge tolls through the assembly. Now it looks as if he doesn't: thanks in part to outer-borough opposition, Silver is backing off, says PolitickerNY. It's not that the assembly speaker doesn't necessarily have the votes, but the state senate seems to lean against it; two Democrats, Carl Kruger and Ruben Diaz, oppose the two-dollar tolls, and with the Dems' thin majority and Republicans united, that would seem to be that. "I think that we will get there, it may take a little longer than we ultimately anticipated," Silver told a press conference. Maybe he's hoping for indictments to eventually remove some opposition.
