Typical: The Times goes across country for a story in its own backyard

Right on the heels of our article on youth basketball, the Times, in its Sunday magazine, published its own takeout on the subject. While our story keeps the focus on the incredibly interesting local scene, the Times wrote about a kid way out in Seattle who is getting a lot of attention for his talent. And the Times article missed one glaringly obvious explanation for why the kid is so good: he's a grade exception. He's 13 years old, competing in the sixth grade with kids who are 11 and 12. That means he may be 18 months older than some of the kids he's playing against. At that age, that's a huge advantage.
