Budget Passes House, Senate; Conference Next

Finally, and in the dead of night, the House, then the Senate passed the Obama budget. The next step is a conference committee that will reconcile the two bills. Among the sticking points between the two houses are healthcare provisions and greenhouse gases. Republicans contributed not a single vote in either house; Democratic Senators Ben Nelson and Evan Bayh also opposed, as did 20 Democratic House members. Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell said the plan "taxes too much, spends too much and borrows too much."

The House also voted on GOP alternative budget, which had no chance of passing, and 38 Republican members refused to vote for that, either.
