If you were planning on dropping 50 cents to pick up Thursday's Daily News because of the headline - "A-Rod Book Bombshell" - let us save you the change.

The first of two front page revelations, supposedly taken from Selena Roberts's upcoming Rodriguez biography, that "Slugger may [Emphasis ours] have taken HGH while playing for the Yankees" is based on an unnamed major leaguer. This unnamed source is quoted as saying "Rodriguez and steroid-tainted pitcher Kevin Brown were seen together with human growth hormone -- HGH -- in 2004." Exactly what is meant by being seen "with" HGH isn't specified.

Supposedly, according to the story, "Two other anonymous Yankees said they believed A-Rod was using based on side effects they saw."  The Daily News did not reveal what these side effects were and how the two anonymous Yankees were qualified to identify the side effects.

As for the other major expose emblazoned on the cover, that "Hints he took steroids as early as high school days" is based on an opinion by Jose Canseco: "Was he on steroids in high school? I think probably so. I worked out with him when he was 18. He could lift almost as much as I could"  -- which is odd, because one of the observations almost everyone made about A-Rod after his steroid use admission is when he joined Texas in 2001 is he appeared "skinny."

But, like Satchel used to say, you pays your money and takes your choice.
