Peter Kaplan Leaving the Observer

The Observer is a class act, made by smart people for smart people, so naturally in recent years it's had some problems. But editor Peter Kaplan, with the paper since 1994, has been a steady presence -- as the Huffington Post called him, a patriarch -- and a counterweight to the paper's younger, more restless owner, Jared Kushner. Now Nikki Finke at our sister Pub Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that Kaplan is leaving the Observer. In the Observer's own announcement, Kaplan is valedictory ("I had a little newspaper in New York City! You can't beat that") and says he's looking forward to spending time with his family.

Hours before Kaplan's leavetaking was announced, Gawker suggested that Kushner was looking to divest of the paper, which the owner suggested was untrue. You may read what Nikki thinks in her item. Image via the Observer.
