Bloomberg Psyched About Sotomayor (Who Thwarted Him on Homeless)

meanbloomberg.jpgMayor Bloomberg is psyched about President Obama nominating Bronxite Sonia Sotomayor to the highest court in the land:

"When I met with the President in the Oval Office earlier this month," he says in a statement at his website, "I took the opportunity to tell him that Sonia Sotomayor would be an outstanding choice for the Supreme Court, and people whose legal opinions I greatly respect speak very highly of her. She has been an incredibly good federal judge, and having risen from humble beginnings in the Bronx, she brings a perspective that will serve the Court -- and our nation -- very well."

Bloomie referring to Sotomayor as an "incredibly good judge" must mean a 2002 decision by a certain three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals -- a panel Sotomayor was on -- is water under the bridge. Back then, the mayor wanted to "disperse" groups of homeless people who -- as they'd been invited to do by the ministry -- snoozed on the steps of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church at night. Pointing to something called the First Amendment, Sotomayor and colleagues took sides with the riff-raff, and against the Mayor, by suggesting the city back off.
