Tammany Finally Tamed in the Village

Last Hurrah for Tamawa! Village is Reform Country!

A margin of 41 votes marked finis to any dreams of renewed glory Carmine G. DeSapio might have been nurturing. The victor was Edward I. Koch, who managed in the September 5 primary to defeat the former Tammany Chief's all-out challenge to regain his old spot as Democratic district leader of Greenwich Village. The narrow victory of the Village Independent Democrats sharply contrasted with the resounding 1300-vote triumph against DeSapio two years ago.
Unofficial returns showed Koch the winner by a vote of 4656 to 4615. In what was widely regarded as a tribute to her community efforts, Carol Greitzer, the VID's incumbent female district leader, roundly defeated DeSapio's little-known running mate, Diana K. Halle, by 4521 to 3868.
DeSapio has refused to conceded defeat until an official tabulation is made by the Board of Elections today (Thursday). Political observers, however, expect no substantial change in the results.
...Koch told the jubilant mob that "this second victory over machine politics in the Village will prove to be the 'last hurrah' for the boss system in this community."
