H&M Goes Union

Things are coming up roses for retailer H&M. Their stock hasn't been doing too badly lately, and they're even opening a new store this week at Lexington and 86th. This may have encouraged the company to reach an agreement with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union for a 3-year contract including a 3 percent wage increase and other raises possible down the line -- the store's first unionization. H&M has about 1,000 workers in the city.

Even the Neighborhood Retail Alliance is favorable: "Let's hope this is a sign of things to come," they say, "and, hopefully, new retail developments in the city will only come through with the assurance that retail workers won't be shafted by subsidy taking friends of the mayor."
