After jury requests for information that extended the wait for a verdict, Janet Redmond-Mercereau, the Staten Island woman accused of killing her fire marshal husband, has been found guilty of second-degree murder. She had claimed that she did not know who shot Douglas Mercereau in his bed in December 2007, and that she did not realize it had happened until long afterwards because she was in her daughter's bedroom at the time, wearing earplugs. She admitted that her husband has been verbally abusive to her after her weight gain due to a thyroid condition, which the prosecution presented as the motive for her husband's murder. She will be sentenced on June 25.
