Man Beaten in Village, Critically Injured (Updated)

Our intrepid legman and Voice food critic Robert Sietsema writes to tell us, "There's a smear of bright red blood on the pavement, a few blood-soaked rags, some police tape connected to trash cans, and a Channel 7 Eyewitness News truck at the corner of West 10th and 7th Avenue South." From this morning's Fox News report, it would appear to be left over from an incident at 2:30 a.m. last night, when a 50-something man from upstate New York was beaten by several goons at Christopher and 7th Avenue and left in critical condition. He got into an argument with them before the beatdown ensued. Either that, or this is a really unlucky spot you should avoid.

Update 2:15 p.m. Commissioner Kelly says NYPD is looking into this for a hate crime. Asked it he meant an anti-gay bias incident was suspected, Kelly said, "We are certainly not excluding that as a possibility." Christopher Street has seen some bias attacks in recent years -- indeed, being a historically gay address, it's been seeing them since long before hate crime legislation existed.
