Jockbeat: A-Rod Revelations Continue to Underwhelm

No wonder the New York Times wants to destroy the Boston Globe - it's the only paper on the East Coast that dares to print something good about Alex Rodriguez!

Friday's Daily News came up with yet another shocking revelation from Selena Roberts's new book, namely that that Rodriguez "was an insecure primadonna who made a clubhouse attendant load his toothbrush with toothpaste after every game in his first three seasons with the Texas Rangers."

Did A-Rod also use some sort of banned substance to whiten his teeth, something that would give his smile an advantage over other players?  Stay tuned!

Sunday's Boston Globe, though, apparently found a couple of A-Rod items that other papers missed. In an interview of Boston shortstop Nick Green with the Globe's Nick Cafardo, the former Yankee was asked about his relationship with The Most Reviled Player in Baseball...

"I consider him a friend. When I came up to the team, he took me under his wing. I lived with him in his apartment in Manhattan for a couple of months, and in the off season I was down with him in Miami ...

"People are always trying to get me to say something bad about the guy, but there's nothing bad to say ... He was a great teammate as far as I can see. I know that he really helped younger guys all the time, especially Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrera. He spent a lot of time with those guys, teaching them the game and showing them the right way to do things, just as he did with me. I think we all appreciated what he did for us."

Cafardo's column also takes a shot at another Roberts expose, as revealed by the Daily News, namely that when Rodriguez was with the Texas Rangers he had a reciprocal pitch-tipping scheme going with other players. In other words, in games that were lop-sided, A-Rod would supposedly relay his catcher's signal to opposing hitter and in return he would get a tip from them when he came up to bat. DeMarlo Hale, Red Sox third base coach and formerly a coach with the Rangers when Rodriguez was there, is dumbfounded, writes Cafardo. "I must have been looking at a different game if that was happening. What I'll say about Alex is this:  He was one of the hardest-working players I ever coached or managed."
