2 U.S. Reporters Sentenced to 12 Years Hard Labor in North Korea

Having given the world the finger with its recent missle and nuclear tests, North Korea has taken things further by sentencing two American correspondents from Al Gore's Current TV to 12 years at hard labor. Reporters Laura Ling and Euna Lee were detained by the North Koreans on March 17, and this morning the Chosun Central News Agency announced they had been "convicted of crimes against the state and illegal border crossing, and the Central Court sentenced them both to 12 years of reform through labor." The agency also says that they "are not classified as political prisoners. Family members or relatives of prisoners can visit the reeducation camp and are allowed to bring in food for prisoners." This weekend the Obama Administration continued to talk tough about North Korea, raising the possibility of sanctions for its weapons testing, to which North Korea's official press responded that the government would "consider sanctions against us as a declaration of war and answer it with extreme hardline measures."
