Former NY Health Commissioner, U.S. Surgeon General Pleads Guilty to Fraud, Will Do Community Service

novelloposter.jpgBack in May, when fraud charges were brought against former New York health commissioner and U.S. Surgeon General Antonia Novello, her lawyer said it was a frame: "there are people who are vindictive and who've wanted to get her ever since she left the state." He still seems to think so -- "politics is a dirty business," he says -- but his client has pleaded guilty and will do 250 hours of community service and pay $22,500 in restitution. Novello was accused of having state employees drive her and her mom around and move stuff out to her house, and of filing false documents to cover her tracks. These are felony charges, but her plea arrangement keeps her from doing time.
