Hell's Kitchen Neighbors March in Memoriam at Deadly 9th Ave Stretch

Not all this weekend's parades were as cheerful as the Puerto Rican Day festivities. Because the stretch of Ninth Avenue between 45th and 36th Streets has seen a lot of pedestrians run down by cars -- the most recent being art restorer Susanne M. Schnitzer, killed in a hit and run on April 9 -- the Hell's Kitchen Neighborhood Association, CHECKPEDS (Clinton/Hell's Kitchen Coalition for Pedestrian Safety), and Transportation Alternatives sponsored a memorial march in the manner of a New Orleans jazz funeral cortege. Along with friends and family members of several victims, the march was attended by Manhattan borough president Scott Stringer, state senator Tom Duane, public advocate candidate John Liu, Manhattan D.A. candidates Richard Aborn and Cyrus Vance Jr., and others. "Until we treat a crash scene like a crime scene," said Executive Director Paul Steely White, "the most dangerous drivers will continue ignoring laws requiring them to yield to pedestrians."
